Original Composition: And There Were Great Whales
This is a
collection of photos that I have taken over the years, with exception to the
Melon-headed whales. They were taken by a Guamanian photographer that was on
board to take underwater photos of our dive guests. I was captaining the dive
boat out to the area of the Blue Hole on Guam. All of the sudden there were 80
or 90 Melon-headed Whales all around us. I got the crewman to take the wheel
and I jumped into the ocean to see the whales underwater. I asked the
photographer to jump in with me and take photos of the whales. He was a little
apprehensive to enter a sea with so many whales in close proximity. He held
onto the dive ladder on the side of the vessel to take the photos. In one of
the photos you can see the hull of the catamaran.
This is a
photo of Denalee and I diving in the Blue Hole area where we saw the
Melon-headed Whales. We are hanging from the decompression bar after
diving down to 135' at the Blue Hole. Denalee is the flutist for the
composition. She is a very good flute player and we have enjoyed playing flute
and guitar together over the years. Interestingly, there is a fair amount of
very nice improvisation that she did for the piece. Thank you, Denalee!
All of the
other photos were of course taken by me in Alaska. Mostly in Sitka Sound,
but all over the Southeast.
